Myrtus communis L. (Myrtaceae) has long been used in folk medicine to treat inflammatory and infectious processes such as prostatitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, and colds, with different experimental studies demonstrating its antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, and antioxidant activities.
Berries are edible and may be eaten raw, but are at best moderately tasteful. Dried flowers, leaves and fruits are used to flavor foods. Leaves are sometimes used as a substitute for bay leaves. Fresh flowers may be added to salads.
Myrtle contains chemicals that might help fight against fungus and bacteria, and reduce swelling. People use myrtle for acne, canker sores, abnormally heavy bleeding during menstrual periods, persistent heartburn, warts, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.
