Chinotto (Italian: [kiˈnɔtto]) is a carbonated soft drink produced from the juice of the fruit of the myrtle-leaved orange tree (Citrus myrtifolia). The beverage is dark in color. Its appearance is similar to that of cola, but it is not as sweet, having a bittersweet taste.
Chinotto oranges are incredibly sour, and the essential oils are predominately used to flavor candies, liquors, and soft drinks. The trees are also prized for their slow growing, compact nature, reaching up to three meters in height, and are one of the only citrus trees with no thorns.
No calories, caffeine or carbohydrates. A true cult drink, Sanpellegrino Chinotto is a beverage with a taste that is entirely its own. Born in the 50s, Chinotto is made from extracts of zesty sun-ripened chinotto oranges that get their distinct flavour from the unique conditions of the Mediterranean land.
Chinotto oranges (Citrus myrtifolia) come from a tree that originated in China. They're shaped similar to typical oranges, but their taste is more tart and sour—and their smell is intense. California's chinotto harvest begins in April and ends late May. In Italy, the fruit is commonly grown in Liguria and Sicily.
However, for many years, chinotto has been one of the primary ingredients in many Italian digestivi. A digestivo is an after-dinner drink that is intended to aid digestion. If you're familiar with limoncello or Fernet Branca, those are just some of Italy's famous digestivi.
