Since its introduction to the United States in 1854, carob has done well only in the warm subtropical climates (southern Florida, the Gulf States, New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California) where annual rainfall is not below 30 to 35 cm (Bailey 1947; Coit 1951, 1962).
It is believed that the fruit of the carob tree was used to feed Mohammed's armies. The Greek word for carob is keras, meaning horn, in reference to its arc shaped pods. It is also known as St. John's Bread and, according to the Bible, sustained St. John the Baptist in the wilderness (Mark 1:16).
Carob (Ceratonia siliqua) is a tree native to Mediterranean regions. Its fruit are broad pods that are eaten as food and also used in medicine. The carob fruit contains dietary fiber and antioxidants. Chemicals in carob might have weight loss effects, reduce blood sugar and insulin levels, and lower cholesterol levels.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Surface roots can be aggressive. Small rodents can occasionally cause damage to the plant. Some cultivars can experience issues to scale and mildew. Larva of Ectomyelois ceratoniae (carob moth) may cause extensive damage to pods and seeds.
Technically, you can gnaw on raw carob pods, but it's hard work and not the most pleasant experience. You can buy carob powder, which is probably the most common way it's consumed.
